> Frankie is not a hero and not even a good man, just a gambler who learned that playing safe is worse than losing. A bullet-paced noir about consequence.

Tropes: Gambler antihero, Classic hardboiled tone, Dockside noir, Consequences, No one gets clean
Read if you like: classic pulp-style noir, gambler stories, fast, brutal, short novels

Written in the hardboiled tradition, this is a story about a man running from his past through neon-stained docks and cigarette-lit bars. It is less about the crime than about the consequences.

### The feel of the read

This is the most straightforwardly hardboiled of the set: a gambler protagonist, dockside settings, and prose that leans on the genre's classic rhythms rather than a twisty structural hook. The book itself frames Frankie as "not even a good man," which sets reader expectations early.

### Who this book is for

Best for readers who want old-school pulp voice over a puzzle-box plot, and who are fine with a protagonist who isn't trying to be likeable.

### Format, price and where to read it

The Hook and The Trap is $3.99 on Kindle, free to read with Kindle Unlimited, and also available in paperback.
